Perhaps the best known islands in the Andaman Sea the Similan Islands have quite a reputation.

Part of the Mu Koh Similan national park, the islands are famous for being Thailand’s adventurous playground for divers.

Located northwest of Phuket, the Similan Islands are a favourite destination for both yachts and tour boats. The Similan Islands archipelago include Koh Huyong, Koh Payang, Koh Payan, Koh Miang, Koh Ha, Koh Payu, Koh Hin Pousar, Koh Similan, Koh Bayu, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai.

The islands can be found 70 kilometres off of the coast of Phang Nga province. The most popular activities that people enjoy here are snorkelling and scuba diving. In fact, the Similan Islands have been counted among the most interesting dive sites in the world.

Koh Similan is the largest island in the archipelago. The underwater world is full of rock formations and vibrant coral reefs in a variety of shapes and forms. Divers can expect to see enormous schools of colorful, tropical fish here. Koh Bon is well known for Manta Rays, while the far away dive sites of Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock are popular places to spot whale sharks, especially in the months of February and March. Sea turtles are also prevalent in the waters of the national park.

Another Similan Islands highlight is Sailing Boat Rock. You’ll arrive to the island by boat, and then clamber up crevices and archways to be met by an outstanding view over Island No. 8 and the bay below. Sunset here is sensational, and photos are a must! The landscape of the Similan Islands is quite unique. Giant boulders, like the ones at Sailing Boat Rock, can be spotted across the archipelago. The islands feature dense forests, diverse tree species including ironwood and bamboo, as well as wildlife such as squirrels, bats, tropical birds and lizards.

Fancy staying in Phang Nga province to shorten the distance to the Similan Islands? Khao Lak is a sleepy beach town that is perfect as a stopover. X2 Khao Lak Anda Mani Resort is a tiny, boutique hotel with nine rooms. The resort is stylish, chic and located right on the beach. The Sands Khao Lak by Katathani is a massive resort that offers a bespoke experience to travellers from all walks of life.

The Similan Islands are seasonal, and open annually from October until approximately May. Chartering a yacht to the Similan Islands is a fantastic idea and a wonderful way to see the archipelago on your own terms. You will have the chance to bask in the sun and relax, while also leisurely exploring the dive sites and islands of the national park.
