Located on the mainland of southern Thailand, the province is blessed with stunning scenery and white sand beaches.
Krabi is well known for its limestone karst mountains, many of which extend into the sea, as well as dense mangrove forests.
Krabi is a large province that offers a lot to see and do. Cultural opportunities are abundant and visiting Wat Tham Suea is a definite for any itinerary. Better known as Tiger Cave Temple, this complex is a religious site that also features a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley. Be prepared to climb 1,237 steps to reach the summit of the temple complex. Although grueling, the stunning views of the landscape, limestone karsts and giant Buddhas are worth it.
The limestone karsts have made Krabi a hot spot for rock climbing. Climbers from around the world regularly descend on the province to take up the challenge of scaling these cliffs. Island hopping is a popular activity from the Krabi mainland. A great way to explore the variety of islands and turquoise waters is to charter a private yacht. This allows you to visit the islands at your own pace and take all of the time you want to have a tailored high seas adventure.
The Hong Islands are a must visit for nature lovers. There is a lot of wildlife to be spotted here, including large sea eagles, and the snorkeling is also very good. Four islands which are closer to the Krabi coast include Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tub and Koh Mor. These small islands are good for a short trip or a little family adventure.
Beaches worth exploring include Railay, Tonsa, Phra Nang, Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara. Railay and Tonsai are good spots for rock climbing, while Phra Nang Beach is home to Princess Cave, which contains an interesting combination of large phallic symbols and offerings which are said to increase potency and prosperity.
Ao Nang Beach is at the heart of Krabi’s vibrant tourist centre, while Nopparat Thara Beach is a favourite amongst the locals. When in Krabi Town, stop into Gecko Cabane Restaurant for a bite to eat. This restaurant serves up authentic European favourites and Asian Fusion plates at an affordable price. Plus, the restaurant is stylish and the atmosphere relaxed.
