Stunning twin islands located southeast of Phuket, the Racha Islands are easy to reach and a popular day trip destination
The smaller island, Koh Racha Noi, is completely uninhabited which is quite appealing. There are no tourist services or facilities on the island, but the diving here is exceptional.
The water is deep and it’s not unusual to have visibility around 30 meters. Koh Racha Noi is teeming with marine life, and it is the best
place to see a giant Manta Ray in its natural habitat, especially at the southern tip of the island. There are also a lot of nice rock formations to marvel at underwater.
This is a good place to learn how to scuba dive. Dive sites worth checking out around Koh Racha Noi include Banana Bay, Marina Bay and North Bay.
Koh Racha Yai is the larger of the two Racha Islands. Upon approaching the island, visitors are treated to a pristine bay of turquoise water and a long, white strip of sand which seems to never end. This is the main bay known as Ao Tawan Tok or Ao Bungalow. The water here is clear, which makes it an ideal place for snorkelling, however, it can get busy in the afternoon with boats visiting the bay.
Koh Racha Yai is still very much charming and rustic. Most of the island’s population are locals who have grown up here. Parts of the island are still covered in dense jungle and it’s not uncommon to see water buffalo at mud holes. If you have time for more than a day trip, the island is a wonderful getaway.
